Circumcision, Hajj, and Marriage

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

Asslama-lekum I recentlty got married to a muslim person, and i never knew he has not been circumcitsed, i dont even know if the Azaan was read to him when he was born. When i ask my mother in law she said i never knew what it was called thats why i never had it done. I believe that its a lame excuse. Is my marriage halal or haraam. My husband said he has done haj, is that valid? My husband has no interest in having a circumcision done. I believe he is only pretending to be a muslim, he does'nt preach. Please advise.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits. While circumcision is an incumbent religious duty in Islam, it is not a condition for being a Muslim. Given that, it doesn't affect the validity of his prayer, or your marriage.

[ref: Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

May Allah grant you ease and facilitation in your marriage. In terms of your marriage-situation, please consult someone local, insha'Allah.

And Allah alone gives success.

Now What?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
