How to Offer Make-Up Prayers

Answered by Sidi Moustafa Elqabbany

Question:

How exactly is one supposed to pray qaddah (missed prayer) prayer? Do I do it at the time that I am making up, i.e. fajr make-up at fajr time? Do I read the fatiha as well as another sura? How do I make the intention for it, and do I say the intention out loud or in my head? Do I still pray sunnah or do I just make all my prayers up and then start back with sunnah when I am done making them up?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

A make-up prayers is offered in exactly the same manner as a current prayer. If you have specific questions about prayer in general, please submit them. However, it doesn't make a difference whether the prayer is current or a make-up. One exception to this is that in the case of a make-up prayer, there is no need to wait for the prayer time to enter, since it has already passed. One can offer make-up prayers at any time, even at times when prayers are normally forbidden.

The basics of a valid prayer are covered in Sidi Mostafa Azzam's Immaculate Raiment, which is found here:

THE IMMACULATE RAIMENT: The Essentials of Prayer

One doesn't pray sunnah prayers while making up missed obligatory prayers. The following article deals extensively with making up missed prayers:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
