Answer about marrying non Muslim woman who takes her children to Sunday church

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

I believe that the brother who answered this question needs to elaborate more. From his answer I got that a Muslim man is allowed to marry a Christian woman and she can take her children to church...I believe this is totally wrong. Firstly, to have Nikah, both parties must declare shahadah?...If I'm wrong on this please let me know. I also don't think we can just declare that all Christians and Jews today are of the ahle kitab. And as we know almost all Christian churches teaches the trinity. I believe the brother should elaborate on his answers in order to give Muslims the true picture. I find his answers to be too short and therefore gives the incorrect impression.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

The question has been dealt with:

a) It is valid to marry believing Christian and Jewish women, because their doctrinal errors existed at the time the Qur’an was revealed and permission to marry them given;

b) It is generally unadvisable, and normally highly sinful, especially when one cannot be genuinely sure that it will not affect one’s own religious practice and that of one’s children.

This is the position of the Hanafi school of fiqh. To understand the soundness of the Sunni schools of law, read the articles by Shaykh Nuh Keller and Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad at www.masud.co.uk
