The Answer in the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
The creation of Allah is such that a human being can never fully encompass it with his research and knowledge.
The human mind is very limited. Allah says in the Qur'an: "and He creates what you do not know." [al-Nahl, 9]
Therefore, if there was something unnatural seen then it is not far from the power of Allah.
With regards to Jinns, their existence is proven from many verses of the Qur'an and sayings of the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace). The Traditions have reached the level of certainty (tawaatur).
For example Allah says in Sura al-Hijr:
"And the Jinn, We had created them afore of the fire of scorching wind" [v.27].
There is a whole Sura in the Qur'an regarding the Jinn.
The Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace), many of his Companions and countless pious [and irreligious] people have met [and continue to meet] the Jinn. They are just another creation of Allah and they will also be reckoned on the day of judgment. They eat, travel, marry, have children, worship Allah, learn knowledge, give Fatwa, narrate Hadith, make Bay'a with a Shaykh etc... Just as humans, there are good and evil Jinns.
Therefore if some un-natural presence was felt, then it could be a Jinn. However, one should avoid thinking to much about it. At times its just mind games and could be detrimental for the well being of the person.
What to do:
Try to recite the Ayat al-Kursi and the 4 Qul's [Kafirun, Ahad, Falaq, Nas] before retiring to bed.
Also recite the Dua's of entering and leaving the house.
May Allah save us all from the calamities of both worlds. Ameen.

While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
