Two Contradicting Oaths

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

Someone swore "Bi Haq Allah I will not do X"

And then years later swore "Bi Haq Allah, I will try to do X"

Which oath does he have to follow, how does he expiate?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

One should follow the "better" of the two oaths--to one's religion and worldly life--and expiate for the other. This is what is understood from the sunna of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Please search the SunniPath QA (http://qa.sunnipath.com) for details on how to expiate for broken oaths.

And Allah alone gives success.

Now What?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
