Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Should one accept a monetary gift from one's father or mother in the form of a personal check (or cash) if he saves money in an interest bearing account? If not, why not? What if rejecting such a gift would hurt his feelings or put him off Islam? Please provide details.
Walaikum assalam,
The money in the account (if originally acquired by halal means) is not all haram. Only the interest amount is haram. As such, if they give you money from such an account, it would be permissible to use it and benefit from it.
Given that keeping money in an interest-bearing account is a munkar (evil), it would be obligatory to tell them to stop using such an account, if one thinks they will listen and recommended to even if they will not and no fitna is feared.
If one has taken an emergency leave of absence from one's job, should one voluntarily return a fraction of one's salary for the period of time that he was absent, if he was given permission to absent himself for that time period, assuming that he is paid in full upon his return?
If they gave him permission to be absent, and he was honest in reporting the reason for the leave of absence, then he does not need to return any of the salary for that period.
Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani.
