Madhi or Wadi?

Answered by Sidi Fadi Qutub Zada

Question:

f a drop or two of thick clear liquid oozes out without shahwa and without an erection BEFORE one urinates is it considered madhi or wady? Would it necessitate ghusl? If a trace of this managed to come on the undergarment should one change it or would one need to wash it with water (if changing it is impossible) or would one simply ignore it as it did not amount to the area of a "dirham”?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious and Merciful

This liquid is considered wadi and not madhi. Wadi is defined as a thick white cloudy secretion that has no smell, and usually follows urination and can sometimes come before it. Whereas madhi is a clear thin secretion that exits in small amounts (f: when having a lustful thought or when making a lustful glance). [Maraqi al-Falah 1:150]

Both of these secretions are considered filth and necessitate wudu without ghusl. [Dur al-Mukhtar 1:111]

If a trace of any of these two filths, not amounting to the area of a dirham (approx. 5 centimetres in diameter), affects one’s clothing, then it would be recommended for one to remove it.

Now What?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.
