Quran: Reciting from Memory, Without Wudu, and More

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

Are you allowed to recite Qur'an without wudu from memory? Are you allowed to read ayat without wudu? Are you allowed to hold and recite from pages of Qur'an found separately (i.e. only the 30th Juz) without wudu?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

It is permitted to recite the Qur'an without wudu, though it is best (when reasonably possible) to be in a state of ritual purity. However, if one is in a state of menstruation of major ritual impurity (that which necessitates ghusl) it is unlawful (haram) to recite the Qur'an. In such states, dhikr and supplication remain permitted and strongly encouraged.

Anything on which an Aya or more of the Qur'an is written (and nothing else) is considered to be a "mushhaf" (copy of the Qur'an), and that item would be impermissible to touch directly without wudu.

If the Qur'an is written among other text, and this other text is more than the Qur'an, then it is only impermissible to touch places where the Qur'an itself is written.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani.

Now What?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading or casually listening to lectures, the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program of learning. Picking up a book or reading an article and trying to figure things out on our own is no substitute for learning from someone who has a direct link to our living tradition.

Through joining an online class at SunniPath Academy, you can benefit from convenient, online courses that will give you access to reliable scholars and our popular curriculum learning tracks.
